Hylant's Guide to Hurricanes

We received this valuable information from Hylant and are glad to pass it on.

Even if you don’t live, work or have property in a hurricane-prone area, you may know someone who does. We invite you to share this information with them.

Hurricane season officially begins Saturday, June 1. While we all hope for a quiet storm season this year, it’s important to ready your business in advance for severe weather. We have prepared the following tips and contact lists to assist you.

Before the Storm

Review your insurance coverage and talk to your broker if you have questions.
Create a business continuity plan that will help your business operate with as little downtime as possible before, during and after a catastrophic storm. For ideas and resources, read our blog, “Business Continuity: Continuing Business After a Catastrophe.”
Make sure your colleagues understand safety protocols, such as when and how emergency plans will go into effect, how communication will be managed during and after the storm, when and for how long the business is likely to remain closed, etc.
Take pictures (or video) of your business property, equipment, inventory, and all other contents. Having a record of these items will help you remember and prove ownership if you need to file an insurance claim later.
Record important information (e.g., insurance policy numbers and contact information) contained in papers that could be lost or damaged by the storm and keep it somewhere safe that you can easily access after the hurricane passes.
Engage a restoration company in advance; vet them to ensure they will have the necessary resources, should you ever need them.
As the storm approaches, secure your property and keep your phone charged.

We strongly encourage you to use a local, reputable contractor. Be cautious of non-local contractors (i.e., storm chasers) who approach your business without being contacted by you first. Often their work is substandard and causes issues with getting claims paid.

  • BELFOR: 800-856-3333
